ASOS stations are located at major airports and include a range of instruments to assist with aviation, including visiblity and sky conditions. Some ASOS stations may use human observers to verify or correct these fields, such as setting the specific precipitation type or present weather. Note that because ASOS stations are designed primarily for real-time condition reporting, even stations with longer periods of record may not be suitable for climate monitoring since sensors may be replaced and the surrounding landscape may change over time.
