Rain changed to snow across the high elevations of the North Carolina mountains as freezing levels quickly fell in the wake of a strong cold front. A cold and moist northwest flow developing in the wake of the front across the Tennessee Valley and the southern Appalachians resulted in scattered to numerous snow showers continuing near the Tennessee border throughout the afternoon and evening of the 21st, through the morning of the 22nd. Accumulations were mainly confined to elevations above 3500 feet, where 1 to 3 inches generally fell. Some locations above 5000 feet reported as much as a half foot. | |||
