A quick moving cold front moved through an arctic airmass early in the morning on January 9, 2015. Warm air above a very cold surface layer produced light freezing rain just before and during the morning commute. Even though few places even reported measurable precipitation, the light glaze froze on contact as surface temperatures were well below freezing. Multiple vehicle accidents occurred across the coastal plain of NC.
Patchy freezing rain and drizzle produced pockets of icing on some of the roadways. There were multiple accidents with a fatality when a motorist rear ended a tractor trailer that was stopped due to another accident. The accidents occurred on I-40 in northern Pender County just south of the Duplin County line. |
