Coastal low pressure storm reinforced by another storm moving eastward over the Great Lakes caused four days with precipitation falling as snow most of the time in the Mountains and for a decreasing portion of the period eastward towards the coast. Significant accumulations mostly confined to the northwestern half of the State. Strong winds from the 18th to the 20th caused much blowing and drifting of snow in the Mountains; blew down trees, lifted roots, and destroyed mobile homes in several Mountain counties. Heaviest reported damaged in Transylvania, Wilkes, and Yadkin. Asheville airport reported sustained winds to 60 mph on the 19th. Many traffic accidents and tie-ups due to slick highways caused at least two fatalities in weather-related auto mishaps. | |||
