An area of low pressure tracked northeast along the U.S. east coast. Ample moisture wrapped westward around this low where it encountered temperatures cold enough at all levels of the atmosphere to produce widespread snowfall. Amounts totaled around four inches across the North Carolina Piedmont to five to seven inches across the Northern Mountains of North Carolina. Across the Northern Mountains the weight of the snow caused power lines to dip. When the snow fell off the line, the line then sprung upward impacting other lines and causing power outages. A total of roughly 2900 customers in Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes, and Watauga Counties lost power due to this process. While snow amounts across Surry County were not as heavy, the snow posed a hazard for motorists with at least 60 vehicle accidents occurring in that county. Across the eastern Piedmont and central Coastal Plain counties, snowfall amounts were less, averaging between half an inch to an inch. | |||
