Snow showers developed across the western mountains during the early morning hours. In some areas, the snow changed to freezing drizzle, resulting in extremely slick roads, especially in the Asheville and Weaverville areas. Hundreds of vehicle accidents occurred during the morning rush. Accumulations of ice and snow ranged from trace amounts in the lower valleys to a couple of inches above 3000 feet.
