Snow began in the western portion of the state on the night of February 28 and spread over more than half of the state on March 1. Amounts ranged from 4 to 16 inches in the Mountains, 1 to 12 inches in the Piedmont, and zero to 6 inches in the Coastal Plain. Damage mostly from broken tree limbs, power and telephone lines, with a few cases of frame buildings collapsing from the weight of the snow. There were several weather-related accidents, with at least one fatality. | |||
