Winter Storm Event

Ice Storm Started: February 16, 1987 at 12 am EST Ended: February 17, 1987 at 12 am EST
A major winter storm caused extensive damage across North Carolina. Most of the damage resulted from sleet which accumulated to depths ranging from 2 to 6 inches. The heaviest accumulations were in the northern parts of the northeast Piedmont and the northern Coastal Plain where 4 to 6 inches were common. The weight of the ice caused many roofs to collapse resulting in the loss of some farm animals, and the loss of a great deal of property. In the eastern part of the affected area, the sleet was mixed with a large amount of freezing rain causing extensive damage to power lines. In fact, one electric coop described the storm as the most expensive in history for them. The precipitation began lightly in the early morning, and by early afternoon about an inch had accumulated in most sections. But the precipitation increased in intensity during the evening, and was even accompanied by thunder. During this two to three hour period, most of the ice fell. In the northern mountains the storm produced 4 to 6 inches of snow.
