A freak Spring snowstorm moved across the State producing record snowfalls for so late in the year, but otherwise causing only minor problems. Snow totals ranged from 6" in some mountain locations to 2" in the western and northern piedmont. The 5" at Boone and the 1.8" at the Raleigh-Durham Airport were both record amounts for so late in the year. Because of warm soil temperatures, much of the snow melted as it fell. Gale-force winds which accompanied the storm gusted to 70 mph at the Beaufort-Morehead City airport and destroyed a house under construction causing $20,000 worth of damage in Longbeach. The subsequent cold spell that followed the snow was much more damaging as countless record low temperatures were recorded across the State. Many stations recorded five consecutive nights of subfreezing temperatures which devastated many of the State's agricultural commodities. The peach crop was hardest hit between 80%-90% of the crop was destroyed. Apples, strawberries, blueberries, and other crops suffered lesser yet still substantial damage. Damage estimates to the peach crop alone reached $10,000,000. | |||
