An unusually late winter storm moved through the state producing heavy snow and gale-force winds. Also uncommon was the area of heaviest snow, which extended from the Southern and central Piedmont into the entire coastal area. Snowfall started around dawn near Charlotte and quickly moved northeast. Many coastal areas, however; did not receive snow until the evening hours, when it was accompanied by thunder and lightning. The snow, which was the heaviest for so late in the season in many areas, was wet and accumulated on trees and power lines causing many power outages. Had the storm not been preceded by warm, spring-like conditions, snowfall accumulations would have been much greater. Winds from the storm reach 87 mph in Carteret County and exceeded 70 mph in many other locations. This resulted in downed trees and power lines and some structural damage. A mobile home in Otway lost its roof during the height of the storm. Snowfall amounts include: Greensboro Trace, Asheville 1", Raleigh-Durham 3", Charlotte 10", Fayetteville 9", Greenville 5", Clinton 8", Elizabeth City 7" and Wilmington 5". | |||
