A major winter storm hit the western sections of the state, producing heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain. The precipitation, which started as snow on the afternoon of the 20th, turned to freezing rain on the 21st. The combination of snow and glaze downed trees and power lines, toppled several radio TV transmitter towers, caused countless traffic accidents, and caused numerous roofs to collapse. Between 75,000 and 100,000 homes were left without electricity, forcing hundreds of people to emergency shelters. One man died from exposure after his car became stuck on an isolated road in Avery County. Snowfall totals from the storm ranged from 6 inches at Asheville, Brevard and Highlands to 15 inches at Boone, 18 inches at Grandfather Mt., and 37 inches at Mt. Mitchell. The exact extent of the damages, though great, is unknown. | |||
