Snow developed across the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains as a cold front moved across the area during the early morning of the 26th. A quick 2-4 inches fell during the morning, mainly above 4000 feet. After a brief lull, a moist northwest flow developing behind the front resulted in scattered to numerous snow showers developing near the Tennessee border by afternoon, which continued off and on through the 27th. 36-hour accumulations ranged from 4-8 inches across the high elevations (mainly above 4000 feet), while the valleys saw little more than a dusting. The highest totals occurred across the Smokies, Balsams, and surrounding mountains.
A band of light snow showers moved through northeastern portions of the state during the predawn hours, dropping a dusting to as much as 1.5 inches across the northern Piedmont counties. |
